In September 2026, Facebook had more branded searches than WhatsApp among social media platforms in New Zealand. Facebook had about 2.4 million branded searches, while WhatsApp had 184,000. Facebook made up 30.6% of all social media platform searches we track, and WhatsApp accounted for 2.3%. When we asked ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews about social media platforms, Facebook appeared in all five answers and WhatsApp in two. Facebook was mentioned before WhatsApp in every answer.

In three ChatGPT questions and two Google AI Overviews, Facebook appeared in all five answers. WhatsApp was mentioned in two out of five: not in any of the three ChatGPT answers, but in both Google AI Overviews. Facebook was listed before WhatsApp in every answer.
